Description
The Floyd County Prison is looking for an Intern!

Floyd County Correction requests the assistance of an intern in developing an agricultural based plan of action to fully utilize the natural resources provided on a 200+ acre tract of land that lies along the Coosa River in Floyd County. The plan of action is to be completed and submitted by the end of the summer 2024.

PROJECTS:
This position will assess the overall physical layout of the farm tract and review available resources in order to develop an agricultural plan of action to facilitate the use of the land over the next five to ten years. The initial assessment of the farm tract should address the existing resources of the raw land such as standing timber, pasture lands, and existing water resources in order to design programs that could be quickly developed with a minimal financial investment. These initial programs should be geared at developing the land into areas suitable for raw crop farming, bee keeping, the raising of livestock, development of fruit tree orchards, forestry production, or other agricultural sciences. All programs should be developed under the guiding concept of promoting programs that are self-sufficient and autonomous in nature in order to minimize the dependence on outside utilities. All efforts placed in the design should also be used to promote the development of solar, wind, and water based methods of energy productions in the development of the action plan.

Once the initial assessment of the available resources has been completed and the foundation of the action plan are established, the applicant will assist in the further development of the action plan by being an active player in the building of a coalition of local resources to ensure the success of the program. This position will coordinate with local County Extension Offices for soil testing and to establish avenues for the training of sentenced state offenders in various agricultural sciences in the development of the farm tract. All efforts will be made to incorporate local resources available from the newly established Floyd County Agricultural Center, the Berry College Department of Agricultural Science, and the University of Georgia's Cattle research center.

The ultimate purpose of the applicant developing the farm tract plan of action will be to promote educational opportunities for state sentenced offenders in agricultural sciences through practical implementation of cost effective and established measures outlined within the plan of action that can be carried on for years to come. The byproduct of the plan will be a well-trained agricultural returning citizen returning to the state job market, as well as effective land and resource management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The applicant should have a strong background in agricultural science, possess strong organizational skills, a valid Georgia Driver's licenses, enjoy being outdoors and the ability to act independently in the completion of assigned tasks, be able to identify basic terrain features, have basic map reading skills, have good communication skills, and basic computer skills. Applicant must be a current college student, or a recent college graduate who grated within 6 months of the start of the internship.

DEVELOPMENT PLAN:
The applicant should expect 1/3 of the allotted hours in the field assessing resources, 1/3 of the time developing the plan of action, and the remaining 1/3 actively engaging in the implementation of the plan. The position will report directly to the warden of the Floyd County Prison and will work closely with varies county officials in the course of their duties. Performance of the applicant will be measured weekly through various methods to include direct reporting from the applicant, submitted assessments from various county officials assigned to work with the applicant, and the development/establishment of a successful plan of action.
